Landfill Management

WHAT IS LAND POLLUTION?

Did you know that?

  • Every year one American produces over 3500 pounds of hazardous waste

  • Land pollution causes us to lose 25 billion tons of top soil every year. It takes at least 500 years for 2.5 centimeters of topsoil to regenerate

  • According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), electronics waste is rapidly increasing and seriously contributing to land pollution.

  • We throw away more than 250 million tons of municipal solid waste. Most of the waste came from residential homes.

  • Approximately half of our trash is disposed in landfills

  • Over 80% of items in landfills can be recycled, but they’re not

  • Only 2% of our waste is actually recycled

Building Nature preserves is a great way to reduce pollution and reverse soil erosion. Preserves are large areas of open land where animals and plants are protected.

Located on Scotts Corner Road, New Jersey, the Plainsboro preserve is spread over 1,000 acres with nature trails and 50-acre McCormack Lake. The preserve was established through the cooperative efforts of Plainsboro Township and Middlesex County nd is trying to reverse the imact of land pollution on land life

VIDEO LESSONS

We need to go green to save our earth from land pollution. It is the message of this 3.49 Shine Production ‘s

video of what is happening because of land pollution.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wrr6-W-zoaE

How can we go green?  We can help our Earth by opting to use green technologies: like  hydroelectric power or

solar power. When we do not use or burn fossil fuels, we save the earth and reduce our carbon footprint.

Carbon footprint is the amount  of  carbon dioxide and other carbon compounds emitted due to the consumption

of fossil fuels by a particular person,  group, etc.  If we use electric cars instead of gasoline driven cars, we can

reduce our footprint. Did you know that Tesla cars use no gas and what is more, make it “cool” to do so.

Check out this 1.40 sec video on how electric cars can give you wings literally and figuratively.

Unlike gasoline car, cars that run on electricity save the earth. In fact, green technology can be a way out of land pollution. Let us listen to this 17 minute emotional Ted Talk about climate change and greetech by John Doerr, Chairman of Kleiner Perkins. As you will find out John Doerr’s campaign for greentech worldwide began with  a comment by his 15 year old daughter at dinner

Land pollution is also caused by littering and plastic.  Our earth will become a giant land fill if we so not watch out.  We kids can stop that from happening by opting to use brown bags instead. If you  think children cannot make a difference, think again.

KIDS CAN HELP

Here are two students, who not only said no to plastic bags but campaigned long and hard to make Bali plastic-free. They collected a million signatures to declare Bali as a no plastic zone and even went on hunger strike inspired by Mahatma Gandhi  till the authorities agreed to back them up. Let us watch their 21 mins Tedtalk.

Melati and Isabel are two tweens who made a big difference to their country, Bali, by going brown instead of plastic. We can do it too on our own township and country.

Let us begin by reducing, reusing, and recycling. These are the 3Rs  that can save our earth from becoming a giant landfill.  When you practice the 3 Rs, you become a Green girl or Green boy who can make a difference

Land Pollution: What We Do
Forest Trees

TREES AND SOIL EROSION

Let us turn to another issue in connection with land pollution –soil erosion. More and more forests are being cleared for human habitation, commerce and agriculture.  In fact, agriculture is  a big source of soil erosion. As  Dr Alice Tempel pointed out, the Mississippi River carries over 200,000 tons/day of suspended sediments.  This is coming from plowed up fields and other disturbed lands in the Midwest. To  learn more, visit https://lacoast.gov/new/About/Basin_data/mr/Default.aspx

Cutting trees  leads to increased pollution and sedimentation in streams and rivers, clogging these waterways and causing declines in fish and other species.

Here is a fun science demo science experiment to demonstrate exactly how trees help reverse soil erosion even as it cleans the air we breathe

MEET THE EXPERT

Dr. Alice Tempel is the Environmental Specialist,
Recycling Coordinator and Clean Communities Coordinator,
South Plainfield Township

Dr. Alice Tempel received the “Municipal Coordinator” 2016 Award for her efforts to keep the South Plainfield borough green and clean.

Puja: Please tell us about yourself

Dr. Tempel:

I was raised in New York City and came to New Jersey to study Ecology at Rutgers University.  After receiving my doctorate, I decided not to pursue an academic career but rather looked for something more hands-on that I could do to improve the quality of the environment.  The South Plainfield Environmental Commission was looking for someone to help with their projects, and the Borough hired me part-time to work with that volunteer agency.  My job grew as the Borough added more environmental activities.

In my private life, I enjoy gardening, singing Barbershop Harmony, Contra dancing, bird watching, and when I have time, reading fiction.

Puja: What is land pollution?

Dr Tempel: There are various ways the land can be polluted.  Chemical contamination of the soil and groundwater usually comes from industry, either deliberately or accidentally, but other sources such as farming, salting icy roads, and even naturally occurring rocks that may release arsenic or other metals into the soil.  Surface water like streams, lakes and oceans can also be polluted by things that are washed off the land, like various kinds of litter, especially plastic.  When plastic gets into the ocean, it breaks apart over time into small pieces, which sea creatures eat by accident.

Puja: What are the ways in which you bring down land pollution at South Plainfield?

Dr Tempel:

The only work I do directly on land pollution is through our Clean Communities program.  I gather volunteers together to collect as much litter as they can for proper disposal so it won’t get into the storm drains or sit along the roadsides.  The schools, businesses and residents all participate in different programs to pick up litter.

The Recycling Program keeps tons of solid waste out of our Middlesex County landfill and benefits the environment in other ways, like reducing air pollution and the amount of energy needed to manufacture new products.

I also gather information on our contaminated industrial sites for the Environmental Commission, which gives advice to the Mayor and Council to the Planning Board about environmentally sound land use.

Puja: Can  enviroment awareness initiatives  like EcoCamp promote Enviromental science and advocacy? How?

Dr Tempel: :  Absolutely.  The first step in addressing a problem is becoming aware of it.  Then to learn enough about it to know whether this problem is important enough to you for you to try to find a solution to.  An Ecocamp can expose people to a wide variety of issues that they many never even have heard of before, but which can affect them very personally.

Puja: What are the five specific ways kids can help?

Dr Tempel:

Are there only five? Or is there perhaps just one:

Pay attention to the ways your actions can impact other people and the environment:  think about the consequences of your actions.

Simple things to do and not do:

-Pick up at least one piece of litter every day and put it in a litter can.

-Don’t drop litter on the ground.

-Turn off the bathroom faucet while you are brushing your teeth, the turn it on again long enough to rinse.

-Find ways to reuse things instead of throwing them out, for instance, give your old clothes to your younger brother or sister when you grow out of them.

-Don’t buy things you don’t need.

-Turn off the light when you leave a room.

-Walk to school instead of having a parent drive you.

-Study the wildlife in your backyard instead of using electricity playing a video game.

Puja: Thank you so much for your time, Dr. Tempel !!!
